Camel Trekking Through Lake Iriki and Erg Chegaga Dunes
You can start your Desert Camel Trekking from various destinations such as Foum Zguid and Mhamid Elghizlane, both gateways to the Sahara. We also offer departures from Zagora, Ouarzazate, Marrakech, and Agadir. We can organize your camel trekking from wherever you are in Morocco, using minibuses for large groups or 4×4 vehicles for couples or families.
Erg Chigaga is one of the biggest sand dunes in Morocco, reaching around 300 meters high. After trekking a few kilometers, you will arrive at the vast wild Sahara of Lake Iriki. This was once one of the largest lakes in North Africa before the construction of the El Mansour Eddahbi dam in 1971. The lake dried up due to the lack of water flow through the Oued Draa valley and insufficient rainfall.
What Does It Mean to Be a Nomad and What Makes a Nomad Happy?
Being a nomad means living a lifestyle characterized by constant movement, often without a fixed home. Traditional nomads travel from place to place for survival, herding livestock or searching for resources. In modern times, digital nomads work remotely while traveling. However, the nomads we refer to here are those living in the Sahara, moving seasonally in search of grass and water for their herds.
I never truly reflected on what makes me happy as a nomad until I attended university in Agadir. There, I realized how much I missed the desert and its silence. Growing up in the desert with a simple life, moving with a small tent in search of peaceful, hidden places for our herds, is what truly brings me happiness. The vast Sahara, with its golden dunes and endless horizon, offers a deep sense of freedom and connection to nature that is unparalleled anywhere else.
