- Itinerary :
Your adventure begins in Foum Zguid, a small, peaceful town that serves as the gateway to the wild Sahara. After arriving, take some time to explore this charming town and prepare for the expedition ahead. Meet your camel team and guides, who will assist in packing all the necessary supplies for the journey. Spend the night in Foum Zguid, soaking in the calm atmosphere and preparing for the days of exploration and discovery that lie ahead.
After an early breakfast, begin your trek south of Foum Zguid towards the Tajine Mountains. The hike will take you through rocky terrains and arid landscapes, offering a glimpse into the rugged beauty of the Sahara. Upon reaching the mountains, set up camp on a high vantage point to observe nocturnal wildlife. As the sun sets, set up cameras to capture the movements of animals that come alive at night. Wake up early the next morning to witness the desert awakening, with animals moving calmly in the cool morning air.
Descend from the Tajine Mountains and trek towards the edge of Lake Iriki, a vast dry lake that forms part of the Iriqui National Park. This area is teeming with wildlife, and you’ll have the opportunity to spot tracks and signs of animals like Fennec foxes and desert hedgehogs. Set up camp near the lake and prepare for a night of wildlife tracking. With cameras in place, you’ll have the chance to capture nocturnal creatures in their natural habitat, offering a rare glimpse into the hidden life of the desert.
Today’s journey involves crossing the dry Lake Iriki, a unique and expansive landscape that was once a thriving natural park. As you traverse the lakebed, keep an eye out for fossils and tracks left by desert animals. The barren terrain is contrasted by the stunning beauty of the surrounding desert, making for a challenging yet rewarding trek. Arrive at a hidden oasis, where you can relax, take a refreshing natural shower, and enjoy the solitude of this remote location. Spend the night camping under the stars, surrounded by the peaceful sounds of the desert.
Continue your trek towards the majestic Erg Chegaga dunes, one of the most iconic landscapes of the Sahara. The journey will take you through undulating sand dunes, offering a physically demanding but incredibly rewarding experience. The dunes are a prime location for spotting gazelles, especially during the winter months when they seek refuge in this remote area. Set up camp among the dunes and enjoy a breathtaking sunset over the golden sands. Spend the night in this serene environment, listening to the whispers of the desert.
After breakfast, begin your trek across the dunes towards a nomadic settlement. This day offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the culture and traditions of the Berber nomads. Learn about their way of life, from their survival skills to their culinary practices. Enjoy a traditional meal prepared by the nomads and spend the night in their camp, sharing stories and experiences under the starry sky. This cultural immersion provides a deeper understanding of the desert’s human and natural heritage.
On your final day, trek through the lush Oumlalag oasis, a stark contrast to the arid landscapes you’ve traversed. This oasis is a haven of biodiversity, with palm groves and small streams providing a refreshing break from the desert. After crossing the oasis, reach Ouad Ennam, where your camel trek concludes.
